Steam on Linux: A few small requests...
by A. Wilcox
Dear Pierre-Loup,
I'm the project lead of Adélie Linux, a distribution based on the musl
libc that has a focus on lightweight desktop and workstation
environments. I've been trying to "port" Steam over to musl using
compatibility shims, so that our users can enjoy all of the fun games
available (my personal favourites being Cities: Skylines and the WTCC
Race series).
There are a few requests from my efforts with Steam that I would really
appreciate your consideration on:
* Since the musl libc doesn't support multilib, and some glibc
distributions are stopping support of the 32-bit x86, it would be very
helpful if Steam were distributed as both a 32-bit and 64-bit binary.
This would dramatically decrease the amount of work needed not only on
Adélie, but also distributions like Gentoo (which would require rebuild
of all system libraries to support multilib) and Arch.
* Another really important request I have is the porting of Steam to the
PowerPC architecture. A lot of games released for the 360 and PS3 would
already have PowerPC code available in their engines, and there are new
systems such as the Talos II that are incredibly powerful machines that
would make great gaming rigs. Valve would be able to get in on the
ground floor of this new platform, which would show your group's
commitment to being on the cutting edge of technology; being the first
to enable the incredible experiences this platform can create.
Thank you so much for your ongoing endeavours to bring entertainment to
the Linux platform. I look forward to your response.
All the best to you and yours,
