The Adelie Live DVD boots on my PowerBook G4 1.67GHz and is really impressive but when I
try to run Horizon to install it, I can't get it to connect to the Internet. It
detects the ethernet adapter (eth0) but I cannot get it to turn on and connect using DHCP.
When I try stuff like ifconfig eth0 up I just get error messages. Am I missing something
or is the Live DVD missing something?

At the moment, we do not have a text-based interface similar to the GUI application.
However, it is possible to write a Horizon script and execute it.

Since the last post I tried downloading and burning the installer CD instead of the Live
CD image. This one connects fine to the internet but fails at the point where it is
supposed to start downloading and installing the software. There seems to be a required
file missing. When I first tried it complained that Thunderbird was not available but
having tried a custom install without Thunderbird, it still failed almost immediately
giving a different missing file as an excuse. Partitioning, network etc all complete
without without a hitch. This means my previous Ubuntu 16.04 install is now gone so the
only way is forward...

As the target machine is not online, I will paraphrase:
ip a detects a loopback and eth0, state for eth0 given as "DOWN"
ifconfig just shows the loopback.
ifconfig -a shows loopback and eth0
ifconfig eth0 up gets the error "Operation not permitted"
su root ifconfig eth0 up gets "can't open input file"
dhcpcd eth0 command is not available.
I am using a standard commercial router with a built in DHCP service, all other devices
can connect.

Are you running the commands as root or with sudo? Remember adelie has /sbin /usr/sbin
etc. on its directory structure that don't appear in the path of the user shell.
What is the output of "ip a" "ifconfig" and "ifconfig eth0
up" where you get the error? How do you have dhcp running? Do you run it manually
or is it a running service/daemon etc.?
